Procedural sedation ensures that a patient can tolerate a therapeutic or diagnostic procedure. In the absence of the sedation the procedure would be cancelled or fail to be completed.
Speciality Specific National guidelines are available for the safe delivery of sedation Guidelines from the Royal College of Anaesthetists also consider the provision of sedation and anaesthesia outside of a theatre environment.
It is expected that Clinicians and Non-Clinicians providing sedation have undertaken a recognised training programme and are able to provide a log-book that attests to their performance.
The increasing complexity of procedure and the increasing frailty of patients will inevitably lead to complications that may require a legal review.
I have experience providing procedural sedation and expertise leading a cross speciality sedation team in Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust
